Our brief for this job was an extremely low maintenance garden which would still provide a lot of food as well as modifying the climate of the house.

We achieved each of these things through using a diversity of perennial plants. Hot continuous paving is to be replaced with paving with spaces for prostrate herbs which can provide their cooling influence. Grape arbours were used to provide summer shade. Further from the house, larger trees provide food and shade as well and cooling the air beneath their canopy.
