Sustainable food and beauty were the main elements of the brief for this steep coastal suburban block. The backyard receives very little winter sunlight so most food production is to be at the front of the block.  Things which are used very regularly (herbs and picking greens) are in the available sunlight next to the kitchen. To provide a hardy, beautiful visual screen and windbreak, the existing large limestone terraced bed along the front of the block will be converted into a Mediterranean climate forest garden consisting of wind- and salt-hardy trees and shrubs.

To support this forest garden, a very simple greywater system is to be installed. In this case, the clients were very keen to construct most of the elements themselves.  The documentation which accompanies all of our design drawings was focussed, therefore, on simple instructions and references to additional resources.

We very much look forward to seeing how this project evolves.
