For this site the brief was to maximise food production while keeping the system easy to maintain and water use low. The areas close to the house were to maintain a semi-formal aesthetic.
The house was to undergo some work within the year so the focus of the design was the plants. A vegetable garden to supply a small household was established near to the back door of the anticipated extensions. Towards the back of the block, some fruit trees had already been planted. We provided some suggestions for species which would be well adapted to the sandy soils of the block. These were to be planted within a series of ‘net and pan’ water harvesting basins to maximise soil improvement and water harvesting in these very free draining soils.
